Filter cartridges are a subscription. This is a one-off: a porous rock that the bacteria live inside, so it never wears out and never needs replacing. Four liters is enough for a large canister or a sump. Four liters of media, sold by volume rather than by weight. The pores run right through the rock, so it handles nitrate as well as ammonia and nitrite. It is completely inert and, in Seachem's own words, never needs replacing. Because the bacteria live inside the pores, you can rinse it without losing the colony. It works in any canister, sump or wet-dry filter. Put it in the last basket the water passes through, after the mechanical stages. Mesh and sponge should catch the solids before they reach it.
