Dip a strip in the tank, and the color chart on the tube shows five water values at once: pH, nitrite, nitrate, carbonate hardness and general hardness. The tube holds 25 strips, and each strip is one test. The strips work in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. They do not measure ammonia, so for a new tank or a sick fish, a liquid kit that tests ammonia is the better check. API suggests testing once a week, and again whenever something about the water or the fish looks wrong. Close the lid tightly after each strip and keep your fingers off the test pads. Damp air and skin oils spoil the strips.
