A sponge filter run off an air pump is the gentlest filtration a tank can have, which is why breeders and shrimp keepers use them. Nothing can get sucked in, and the sponge itself becomes the bacteria colony that keeps the water safe. It is rated for tanks up to 20 gallons, which covers most 10 and 20 gallon setups. Tubing, valves and suction cups all come in the box, so the only extra you need is an air pump. The flow is slow enough for fry, shrimp and long-finned fish that get pushed around by a power filter. The sponge rinses out in tank water and goes back in, so there is no cartridge to buy again. Rinse the sponge in a bucket of old tank water, never under the tap. Chlorinated water kills the bacteria you spent weeks growing.
