Humid setups need a substrate that holds water without going sour. Coconut husk does that, and it comes compressed, so ten pounds in a box becomes 72 quarts once you soak it. The 10 pound block expands to about 72 quarts, which fills a large enclosure several times over. It holds moisture, which is what keeps humidity up for a ball python, a crested gecko or a tortoise. It absorbs waste odor rather than sitting on top of it. It composts, so an old substrate change can go on the garden instead of in the bin. Soak it in a bucket, not in the enclosure, and squeeze it out until it holds its shape without dripping. Substrate that wet is how scale rot starts.
